Buenos Aires, a charming old lady
For a long time ago Erich and I visited Buenos Aires. I only remember the 9th July Avenue with its impressive Obelisk, the Casa Rosada and nothing else. In fact I created a rule for me that says the following: If you visited a place and it’s been 10 years ago, so you can now return to this place because that trip already has expired. To remember the main sights of Buenos Aires use the bus “Hop on Hop off,” it is an interesting way to visit the main sights of a city. We always do it on the first day of a trip.
Buenos Aires, the old lady, continues with a special charm. For many people Buenos Aires is the most European City in South America. It is a destination close to Brazil and the Brazilians are always well received there. The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina only exists in football, beside this our “brothers” receive the Brazilians very well.
The city center is the Florida Street with its old buildings, some very special like the building of Pacific Gallery (famous shopping center), the Guemes Gallery with its gazebo and the traditional and splendid bookstore Ateneo, these are elegant architectural exemples and worthfile to visit. I like to comment on bookstores, because I am part of that group of people who loves visiting bookstores.
Buenos Aires is a city that has several facets. It has the traditional old side, but also modern neighborhoods like Puerto Madero with its tall buildings of bold lines. The city surprises with mixing the traditional with the modern.
A nice place that fascinated me was the St. Elmo neighborhood, quiet with squares embellished by shady trees where you can see a tango show outdoors while you delight with a coffee or a cold beer when it’s summer.
Buenos Aires is also a vibrant city such as the Retiro neighborhood with buses, trains and many passers-by in the all area.
There are also traditional tours for tourists like the case of Caminito (considered a street “museum” located in the La Boca neighborhood), which concentrates many colorful houses with many shops and restaurants full of tourists and life.
Another pleasant walk is to visit the Recoleta Cemetery where the graves of Argentine personalities like Evita Peron still is visited by everyone.
Buenos Aires is a city for you to come back several times and each time to find out a little more. I did not visit the area of Palermo yet (composed of Palermo Chico, Palermo Hollywood, Palermo Soho and Palermo Woods), very famous for restaurants and bars.
