A partir daí, você vai caminhar e descobrir a Civita. Primeiro chegamos à Piazza San Francesco e, e seguida, bem pertinho chegamos a Piazza Sedile.
- a visita a uma caverna mobiliada nos fez refletir sobre de como a vida era difícil para pessoas que viviam em cavernas, principalmente no que diz respeito a água, luz e, além disso, também conviver com animais nesse tipo de lugar;
- Ver a os Sassi Caveoso e Barisano dos mirantes e saber que pessoas viviam lá desde 9000 mil anos torna tudo muito interessante;
- Caminhar no sasso, com escadarias com muitos degraus, parece que fazemos uma viagem no passado;
- É impressionante observar do mirante à paisagem urbana constituída das habitações em cavernas, a nova camada de casas e mais outra camada de casas modernas por cima;
- Depois de passar o dia descobrindo a cidade, a noite mergulhe nas delícias da cozinha italiana (há bons restaurantes que funcionam nas cavernas);

3- Im Sasso spazieren zu gehen mit all den Treppen und Stufen ist wie einen Ausflug in die Vergangenheit zu machen;
5- Nachdem Sie nun den Tag damit verbracht haben, die Stadt zu entdecken, tauchen Sie nun abends ein in die Köstlichkeiten der italienischen Küche (es gibt gute Restaurants, die quasi in Höhlen funktionieren);

Matera – Witness to a Paleolithic Past (PART II)
What to See in Matera?
Matera offers countless attractions and experiences from museums for history, art and archeology, cultural and environmental routes to routes to taste wines and enjoy the rich gastronomy of the place.
One of the most attractive experiences in Matera is a walk through the narrow stone streets of the Sassi,
where the roofs of houses already form the floors of other houses built on them, where we come across terraces, stairs and squares everywhere.
Matera is definitely a travel destination where you can discover almost everything on foot. The historic center is full of churches (Cathedral, Chiesa del Purgatorio (Purgatory), Madona Del Carmine, Sant’Agostino, San Domenico, San Francesco d’Assisi, some of which are carved out of rock (San Pietro Barisano, Santa Maria Armenia, Santa Lucia alle Mallow, San Giuliano and others).
In addition to the many churches, there are six viewpoints (Cattedrale, Murgia Timone, Piazzeta Pascoli, Ter Archi, Sant’Agostino and San Pietro Caveoso), museums and cultural foundations, as well as restaurants and craft shops.
It is very interesting to walk through the narrow streets of Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano.
Our hotel was in the UNESCO listed area and had a panoramic view of the Murgia National Park.
From there we reach the center of Matera in a few minutes via a steep staircase
and easily reach the viewpoint of Piazza Duomo Barisano in front of the church of the same name. From here you have a breathtaking view of Sasso Caveoso.
From there, continue on foot and discover Civita. First we reach Piazza San Francesco and then very close to Piazza Sedile.
In this district there are restaurants, bars, charming souvenir shops as well as the church and the Palazzo Del Sedile, in which a winter garden is operated. There is also a bakery on this square selling the famous Matera bread.
If you continue to the left of Palazzo Sedile, you will reach Rua Domenico Ricola and go to the end. There is the Palazzo Lanfranchi, where the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata works.
On the left side of the museum you will reach Piazzeta Giovanni Pascoli, where there is another pavilion with a wonderful view of Sasso Caveoso.
In Matera there are also the ruins of the Tramontano castle, which can also be visited on foot.
Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the heart of Matera, the starting point for many tours to discover the city and its surroundings. On this square is the Belvedere Guerrichio detto Tri Archi with a wonderful view of Sasso Barisano.
This is also the starting point of an underground path with a cistern, shops, fountains and houses.
This square is also home to the large Palombaro Lungo cistern, in which the inhabitants of Matera used to collect water.
It is important to note that the Sassi have a water system that collects rainwater and other water sources, which has brought to life the network of canals and cisterns that carried water everywhere. For this reason, Matera has its own underground world.
Near this square is the Matera City Tour tourist office, which offers tours among others to discover the historical center.
Matera is a city with many interesting churches, including the 13th century cathedral with a baroque interior. The rock church of Santa Maria de Idris with frescoes from the 12th century. It is located on top of the Errone hill, from there you have a view of Sasso Caveoso.
Another worthwhile visit is Casa Grotta, where you can see how people lived in the caves. Very impressive! Families even lived in the caves with their animals!
Of all the vantage points visited the Belvedere Murgia Timone is the most interesting in our opinion, where also the regional archaeological nature park of the Rupestrian Churches (rock churches) of Matera is located.
It was at a certain point here that Mel Gibson placed here the three crosses in the film Passion of the Christ. The view of Matera from this point is spectacular!
We got there by taxi, it was the only time we needed a car here!
The park has hiking trails, waterfalls, deep gorges, and rupestrian churches (rock churches), some with frescoes from the 9th century that are listed by UNESCO together with Matera.
Conclusions on the visit to Matera – our experiences:
1- Visiting a “furnished” cave made us think about how difficult life was for people who lived in caves, especially with regard to water, light and also living with animals in such a place.
2- Seeing the Sassi Caveoso and Barisano from the vantage points and knowing that people have lived there for 9,000 years makes everything very impressive.
3- Walking in the Sasso with all the stairs and steps is like taking a trip back in time;
4- It is impressive to observe this urban landscape from the vantage point, which begins with cave dwellings, then a layer of carved stone houses and then another layer of modern houses of our time.
5- Now that you have spent the day discovering the city, immerse yourself in the delicacies of Italian cuisine in the evening (there are good restaurants that almost work in caves);
6- It is very interesting to visit the churches in the caves.
