Hong Kong, das New York Asiens

Hong Kong, the New York of Asia

Hong Kong, located on the southeast coast of China was for 150 years a British colony until it became 1997 a Special Administrative Region of China with the freedom to continue with its capitalist economic system and a certain degree of political autonomy. The town’s location is privileged, surrounded by mountains and the South China Sea. For the Chinese, the city has a good “Feng Shui”, the ancient Chinese science of life in harmony with the environment, nature.

Hong Kong is on the list of oldest Asian Tigers  along with Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea (the new Tigers nowadays are: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam).

The city has an impressive set and variety of skyscrapers as a resulto of bold architectural projects. There are plenty of malls and stores of all known brands. One gets the impression that we are not in that China we know  through books and images, this very colorful architecture of its ornate temples. Hong Kong is a crowded metropolis with about seven million inhabitants who crowd together on a small area of only 1,104 km². The city of Hong Kong has one of the highest population densities in the world.

One of the main attractions of Hong Kong is the show “Symphony of Light” at Victoria Harbour on Hong Kong Island. It is a multimedia spectacle of colored lights, lasers, illuminated skyscrapers on the Kowloon peninsula, separated from the island by the sea and begins with darkness. The city attracts thousands of tourists and a multimedia Supershow, Hong Kong Pulse 3D show, is planned.  Even a visit to the Peak summit with its breathtaking views must not be missed.

The Stars-Avenue is a tribute to the film industry in Hong Kong with a statue of actor Bruce Lee and handprints of famous Chinese artists such as Jackie Chan.

Many people eke out in the smallest apartments quasi crammed in their hard life, many can even afford only a bed of a bunk bed and live in this bed with their belongings like in a cage. Simple cooking facilities and sanitary facilities have to be shared. It is a hard life in the to the sky towering skyscraper-fortresses.

Also, there are people who still live on boats, we were told there was in the past people who have left only once in their lifes the boat, on their wedding day.

Hong Kong and the beautiful lights, the magnificent skyscrapers and the hard tough daily work in order to afford a place among the stars to live – to survive.

Cingapura, cidade-estado espetacular/SINGAPUR, ein SPEKTAKULÄRER Stadtstaat/Singapore, spetacular city-state

SINGAPORE, SPECTACULAR CITY-STATE

“Sir, sir, you forgot to put the paper of your candy into the trash.” I heard these words when I arrived to Singapore after a 24 hours flight  with a stopover in Barcelona, . Yes, this first impression of the city-state of Singapore was confirmed during my stay in the city.

Singapore is a city-state located in Southeast Asia with three million inhabitants, independent from Malaysia since 1965. The population consists of Malays, Indians, Chinese and singapolêses. Imagine a city clean, organized, safe, with fantastic architecture and well-organized traffic (unlike other cities in Southeast Asia). Singapore is great.

The area known as Marina Bay is the part of the town with more futuristic architecture. This area includes the complex of Hotel Marina Bay, in addition to this you find a park with  fantastic gardens with large towers forming artificial tree shapes connected by bridges wherefrom you have a spectacular view onto the gardens, the harbor, the hotel skyscrapers with their majestic architecture, among others. You get the impression to be inmidst  of a science fiction film set. Also, you can observe the influence of the presence of Chinese and Indians in the urban evolution of the city through the visit of to the neighborhoods “Little India” and “China Town”.

Singapore is one of the big “duty-free” areas of the world with stores of all leading international brands and many shopping centers. The city also has top quality restaurants and during the year there are many international events. It is the only city in the world where takes place a night race of Formula 1 and I was there at that  day.

It is for this and other reasons that Singapore attracts around twelve million tourists a year.
